The 2022 story of the great tit (nest #2) in Ostwald:
New material for filming Ostwald tits
A small extension on the top has been installed to integrate a new camera with zoom, enough to get nice shots of the very young birds. In addition, a remotely controlled artificial light will be added to the interior so that there are no hidden areas (such as the nest box). Also, an outdoor camera will allow you to follow the comings and goings of the birds and the flight of the young! To learn more about the technical part, do not hesitate to visit the backstage area by clicking on the "en savoir plus" button below.
A dormitory
A tit occupied the nest box from July 2021 until it built its nest there in the spring. It even brought twigs there during the summer.
Help the chickadees to build the nest
It is possible to offer the birds help in building their nest. Place some pet hair (cat, dog, rabbit or other) high up. You will be able to watch the birds use it and walk away with it to fill their nest, as in this video! Be careful not to use hair from an animal that has been treated for parasites! It can be poisonous to the birds. (24/03)
The male with the meal
The male bringing a caterpillar to the female. It will carry out this task during the entire incubation period and after to feed the young. (23/03)
The female in the nest box
The female will spend a few minutes on the eggs, but will not actually begin incubation until the laying is complete. (30/03)
An aggressive thank you
Surprisingly, after having accepted the food brought by the male, she will be aggressive towards him. (03/04)
7 eggs for this brood
Here are the laying dates, always very early in the morning: 1st egg: 25/03 (05:49 a.m.) 2nd egg: 26/03 (05:46 a.m.) 3rd egg: 27/03 (06:53 a.m.) 4th egg: 28/03 (06:54 a.m.) 5th egg : 29/03 (06:52 a.m.) 6th egg: 30/03 (06:57 a.m.) 7th egg: 31/03 (07:08 a.m.)
The births
The first 2 chicks arrived at 4:42 p.m. and 6:02 p.m. on April 15, the next 5 arrived during the night or on April 16.
The death of a baby bird
2 days after the births, during a cleaning session, one of the youngsters was expelled from the basin, he unfortunately did not manage to regain it and died of cold during the night of April 17 to 18.
With the evening light...
The nest box being oriented towards the west (it is sheltered), the setting sun often gives beautiful colors to the nest! (04/18)
The female outdoors
The female takes a short break on the way out, enough to be admired with the outside camera. (20/04)
A spider gone wrong
Wow, what a beautiful spider on the menu! It takes a while until a little one manages to swallow it. Yum. (20/04)
Evacuation of faecal sacs
From birth, baby birds have the reflex to turn around to show their backsides to their parents when they have an urgent need. And the parents collect the droppings to keep the nest clean, and they continue to evacuate it so as not to attract the attention of predators by leaving traces. (23/04)
Another baby bird outside the bowl!
It must be said that the female does the cleaning energetically, it has happened several times, fortunately without consequence now, the little ones manage to get into the bowl to keep warm. (27/04)
Various insects
We saw lots of insects scrolling through the beaks. Like this one, it looks like it has a shell. Hard to eat? (30/04)
The mess in the nest!
Wow! But the nest seems to be upside down, is it a cave? It will take 1 or 2 days as the nest is completely disorganized. Luckily the female has put everything back in order. (01/05)
Both parents with 6 chicks
Beautiful scenes with the two parents together taking care of their 6 chicks (05/05).
Ready for flight?
The calm before the storm... Now they look ready to go. Admire how beautiful they are! (05/05)
