The 2021 story of the kestrel in Théding:
The intruder again!
Since the return of the hawks, a 2nd female has come very close to the nest box. Here she followed the male to the roost, but was chased away by the legitimate female who was in the nest. (20/04)
The male learns to brood
This video is funny: the male comes to replace the female on the eggs, but he is not yet comfortable with his brooding debut. He gives up quickly, but it will get better later. (20/04)
The whole laying
6 eggs this year! Here are the laying dates: April 1st 13 | 2nd: April 15 | 3rd: April 17 | 4th: April 19 | 5th: April 21 | 6th: April 24th. The female started brooding on April 19th. So the first 4 babies should be the same age and the last 2 will arrive 2 and 4 days later. The brooding male
The male lies on the eggs after bringing prey to the female. The future mother eats outside the nest box. (25/04)
The falcon defends its territory
More crows near the nest, but here the male knows how to discourage them from leaving by making swooping flights with territorial calls; it's impressive! (27/04)
The 1st falcon has arrived
After 48 hours of "piou-piou" from the shell, the first hawk appeared on the morning of May 18. The low light does not allow for colored lights when the male comes to discover the newborn. A few moments later, the female is already feeding him with a prey that she is chopping into very small pieces.
Close-up of the 2nd and 3rd hatchlings
1 hour after the first hawk, number 2 and 3 appear, still wet at the exit of the shell. The field was free to zoom in on them during feeding. (05/18)
A magnificent meal with 3 old falcons of this day
The three were born this morning, their blankets very dry, they are enjoying this meal, which is particularly pleasant to see with all this tenderness. (05/18)
4th overnight birth
Number 4 was born during the night of May 19-20, around 1:42 a.m. You can see the egg open in this photo.
A harmless incident
A hawk, perhaps the youngest, has been displaced by the female's too-rapid departure. Will he manage to find the others on his own, encouraged by the calls of the male? (20/05)
"At the table! Manage yourself!" Dad
This video is very amusing: the female leaves the nest box, perhaps to join the male and retrieve the meal. But the male arrives at the nest with a beak full of prey. He delicately offers it to the young 2-day-old hawks, but they are too young to handle it. The prey is deposited and the male leaves. When the female returns, she places the prey in her reserve for later distribution. (20/05)
The 5th birth
On the morning of May 21, the 5th egg is hatched. We have plenty of time to admire this newborn as the mother feeds the other 4 hawks. There is still 1 egg left...
The lizards, they still move
May 22, the young are 1 to 4 days old. Today, lizard on the menu. It's dead, but when it's time to move to the tail, it starts to move. A completely normal reflex. In fact, it allows the lizard to divert its predator's attention and escape, here it's too late, but it's funny to watch!
Fight between barn and kestrel
This night was not easy for this female kestrel and her 5 young. In fact, the neighboring barn owl came several times to chase the falcon away. This fearsome female is looking for a new nesting site to start her second brood, but this mother kestrel won't let any predator come near her nest and her young. (25/05)
The funny deliveries of the male
Here are 3 funny sequences of the male bringing the prey to the hawks when the female is not around. He must not know that it is still necessary to shred the prey for the young. Luckily the female knows how to do it (05/28)
Delivery during feeding
The meal is not even finished when the male already brings a new prey. This year the young hawks are well fed, the distribution of food is peaceful. (04/06)
Falcon chases owl
It is the turn of the kestrel to impose its law and attack the owl, forcing it to return to its nest box. (03/06 + 05/06)
An elastic field mouse
A prey left in the nest box by one of the parents becomes a game for the hawks. They fight over it by shooting at each other! Eventually, they are not hungry enough to eat it, so they wait for their mother to return to consume it. (05/06)
The falcons are 3 weeks old
A 9-minute video, without cuts, without a big event, but so touching! The female still takes great care in shredding prey to her 3-week-old young. (08/06)
Delivery of the male, without tasting
The male is very effective at hunting: he brings a lot of prey, but he does not know how to distribute it to the young, as most males do. The hawks are old enough to kill themselves, but they prefer to wait for their mother to do so. (11/06)
2 falcons flee following a night attack
27 days old, the hawks have not yet made their first flight, but they should be able to fly, at least a little. We hope so, because 2 hawks threw themselves out of the nest box in fear during a night attack. The parents will feed them outside if they make it to safety. (06/14)
Mortal attack and dispossession of the nest box
This night, June 14-15, 2021, there was another attack by a barn owl among the Théding hawks, but this one went wrong. Despite their young age, 2 hawks fled (following the 2 young ones that fled last night). The last one, too young, was killed during the attack. This morning, the kestrels tried to regain control of their nest box, in vain, the pair is present and seems to want to install its second brood there. Once the kestrels are safe in the garden, the parents will return to feed them.
All is well for the 4 falcons
The 4 hawks that took off violently in the middle of the night are doing well. They have been seen in the trees around the nest box. The parents are still feeding. (20/06)
The owl intervenes during the day against the kestrels
After being attacked by barn owls, the kestrels' nest box is finally abandoned by them. So the kestrels take the opportunity to reinvest by behaving as they did at the beginning of the season: mating, sacrifices, night near the nest. Will there be a second brood (rare but possible)? (29/06)
A falcon comes to shelter from the rain
This young falcon is clever: he comes to shelter from the rain, in one of the niches of the house (07/14)
The nostalgic couple visiting the birdhouse
One month after the early departure of the juveniles. The couple still visits the nest box. No second litter, but we will probably have the opportunity to see them again next spring for a new litter! (07/16)
Passage of a young falcon
Probably a youngster of the year who is retracing the footsteps of his birthplace? (07/08)
